Japanese electronics manufacturer Sharp has announced that they will be launching two Android tablets, a 5.5-inch and a 10.8-inch model, in Japan this December. The devices, dubbed “Galapagos”, will both feature support for WiFi, and will boast screen resolutions of 1024 x 600 for the smaller model, and 1366 x 800 for the larger.
Despite the “tablet” label, these devices are going to be marketed primarily as e-readers, and will be launched in coordination with a Japanese e-bookstore that will feature some 30,000 titles initially. The Galapagos is sure to see some competition in the form of Apple's iPad, which was released in Japan just last month.
Sharp is projecting to sell roughly 1 million units, and is also in talks with Verizon for a US release sometime next year.
