Update – Android 5.1 is now pushing to the HTC One (M7) GP3 device as of 5/12/15. We added the download link below at Step 1.

The HTC One (M7) and (M8) Google Play Edition devices are receiving Android 5.0.1 Lollipop today, but it will take at least a week or two to land on all devices. Good news!! The actual over-the-air (OTA) update is available for you to download and manually install right now. It's really easy to do, so hit the break to get started.

**This is for Google Play Edition (GPe) devices only. Do not attempt to install these updates on any other One (M7) or One (M8)**

1) Download the appropriate OTA Zip file using one of the links below. You need to make sure that you are running the most recent stock version for each device, which is KTU84P (or LRX22C if already on Android 5.0.1). Download the file to your root directory.

HTC One M8 GPe –  From Android 4.4.4 (KTU84P) to Android 5.0.1 (LRX22C)

HTC One M7 GPe – From  Android 4.4.4 (KTU84P) to Android 5.0.1 (LRX22C)

HTC One M7 GPe – From Android 5.0.1 (LRX22C) to Android 5.1 (LMY47O)

2) Reboot your HTC One into Recovery Mode by turning the device off, then press the Volume down and Power key at the same time.

3) Tap one of the Volume keys to highlight Recovery and press the Power button. The device will reboot.

4) When you see the Android with the Red Exclamation mark above it, press and hold the Volume Up key, then press the Power key to show the Recovery Menu.

5) Tap the Volume keys to highlight “apply from phone storage” and press the Power key.

6) Navigate down to /sdcard/0 and select the Zip file you downloaded by pressing the Power key.

7) It will now install the update. After it has completed, select Reboot system now.”

8) Your first boot after the update will take a little longer than normal so don't be worried. Let it do its thing and you will be enjoying Lollipop in no time.

  1. I’m stuck on HTC boot logo screen for the past 5 mins, with a small icon showing an unlocked padlock at the bottom of the screen. I just finished flashing the firmware followed by actual zip file from recovery. I went with the adb sideload method.

Is this normal on a HTC One M8 with GPE CID and MID and also S-Off to take so long to boot ? Any advice..?

  4. Hi everyone, was wondering if anyone would be able to help. I seem to be running into issues with the install.

I tried this on my converted rooted GPE HTC One M8 with 4.4.4. However, when I initiate the install in stock recovery, I get messages about having “unexpected files” and then the installation aborts.

I have changed my CID and to GOOGL001 and am S-Off and everything. Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong here? Appreciate your help!

  5. Worked like a charm. Just be patient if at first it says that it failed and is verifying current system, removing unneeded files, and patching system files. IT WILL WORK! Just give it time.

  6. I have HTC M8 GPE Stock with an unlocked boot loader and S-Lock on. When I get to this step 5 my phone just reboots.

  7. I just got The OTA update and Downloaded it but I tried to installed it but I couldn’t!
And tried to installed by go with recovery mode and It was the same, I got the same error message when it installs :/
Is there any problem with my converted M8 or what? Any Help?

  8. worked flawlessly on my converted M7. Also ran into failed to mount at /data: device or resource busy, just waited for a bit and it worked. All data was kept intact.

    1. I have a converted HTC m7, it seems to have worked for me, did you change your CID to supercid? maybe thats it, and are you s-off?

      1. I also have a converted M7, I installed the update via stock recovery without any issues. My CID is GOOGL001, unlocked bootloader, S-OFF and MID PN0712000.

  10. I also have “check cid failed” just right after I select “apply from phone storage”. Mine is completely stock, locked bootloader and S-ON.

  11. Im currently trying to install. but it ran into failed to mount at /data: device or resource busy. then went to verifying current system, removing unneeded files, and now on patching system files and the bar in the background is still growing.

  12. I am on converted GPe M7 as well and build.prop tells me KTU84P. But when trying to update through stock recovery, it gives me an incompatible fingerprint, telling me I am on 4.4.2. Any ideas as to why this might be? Thanks!

Edit: I am rooted with S-OFF, if that makes a difference.

    1. Sorry, just refreshed the page, I can see theres another user with the same problem further down, I will follow there, thanks.

  13. i have twrp, can i update the ota file with it ? or do i need to install a stock recovery? im on converted gpe. Regards.

      1. I converted mine to a GPE. I set the CID to the Google CID, and I have the stock gpe recovery. But when I download the OTA link from this site and go to apply it through the recovery it aborts it saying “Package expects build fingerprint of htc/m8_google/htc_m8:4.4.4/KTU84P.H/35649:user/release-keys or htc_m8: 5.0.1/LRX22C.H5/434277:user/release-keys; this device has htc/m8_google/htc_m8:4.4.2/KOT49H.H16/326432:user/release keys. Installation aborted. (when I converted the RUU zip I flashed was a 4.4.4 RUU. So idk what I’m supposed to do at this point) Help? Sorry for the long post

        1. Take a look at Step 3 in this link – https://htc-one.wonderhowto.com/how-to/update-your-rooted-google-play-edition-htc-one-4-4-3-without-losing-any-data-0155404/

I think you will need ADB

            1. Looks like your recovery is still only 4.4.2, try and flash this one on it and it should work https://d-h.st/SENO

            2. download the file above, reflash recovery image with adb/sdk whatever it’s called, download OTA, reboot to recovery then see if you can install the OTA directly, you might get some permission errors, simply boot up your phone fire ES explorer and rename /etc/permissions/plaftorm.xml to plaftorm.xml.old and there is a platform.xml.bak – rename that to plaftorm.xml reboot to recovery and reinstall the OTA, mine just worked. I don’t have SD card, HTC one m8 converted to gpe.
I didnt’ even lose any data. :) maybe I should write up a tutorial or something.

            3. maybe you have there other backup – like in my case platform.xml.sd-fix-backup. Renamed, and voila, it works :)

            4. i flashed this recovery and when i enter it, it just shows the google logo forever. i flashed several times but same thing happens

            5. I have the same issue but mine just shows the htc logo and says Entering Recovery… on the top.

        2. I had this same issue with my M7. I got it to work by flashing the stock recovery and using that to install 5.01

  14. I managed to reach step 5, but when I hit the power button, it says invalid operation, and restarts the phone. It doesn’t move to step 6. What am I doing wrong?

      1. Do you mean rooted? I’ve never done anything of the sort to my One M8 GPe. Its the same as when I first got it.

  15. The direction didn’t work on the latest stock GPE M7. I am getting the “Check cid failed” error. Any other idea beside waiting for the OTA update.

      1. He there, Robert, ivestigate before you tell the people something how to install. All this people incuding me are excited and expected that your advice is working and it isn’t. GO AWAY AND LOOK FOR ANOTHER JOB

        1. Here is some update about the error and think about that if you don’t solve it a lot of people felt abonned by you.
E: error executing updater Binary in zip. ……… etc
Solve it, not for me because I am leaving smartphones stuff and go to windows phone because I am sick of people who are destroying android with their incomplete advices
