Ah, fast charging. The convenience of the technology to charge devices faster than ever before is a beautiful thing, There's just a small potential problem when enjoying faster, more reliable charging. Fast charging makes your device get pretty hot, which could cause long-term damage despite the short-term advantages.

Samsung, though, is allowing owners of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge to choose whether or not they use fast charging to send power to phones.

Don't want to hold a miniature furnace? No problem

The Battery section of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge has an option at the very bottom where you can turn on/off fast charging with a cable. With the option activated, your phone will continue charging with an increased speed; however, turning it off means you'll be sent back to standard charging and thus your phone will take much longer to get a full charge. Samsung acknowledges that you may not want to enroll in fast charging because of temperature concerns. But nowhere does it state that compatible wireless chargers will not continue to implement fast charging. So, if you're going to use a wireless charger, be prepared for the phone to disregard your wishes and warm up its internals while charging.

Good on Samsung to give Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge owners this choice. Hopefully more companies follow.

  1. There’s been a mistake in a sentence in the last paragraph: “But nowhere does it state that compatible wireless chargers will not continue to implement fast charging.”. It should’ve been “will continue”.
