With other streaming services such as Disney+ and Netflix having already cracked down on their subscribers sharing login details with people living in different locations, Hulu has decided to jump on the bandwagon by revising its Terms of Service to ban the practice of sharing your login details with people that don't live in the same abode as yourself.

You Will Comply (They Hope)

The Terms of Service now include the following wording, which is rather specific and unambiguous:

Account Sharing.Unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household. “Household” means the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside therein. Additional usage rules may apply for certain Service Tiers. For more details on our account sharing policy, please visit our Help Center.

We may, in our sole discretion, analyze the use of your account to determine compliance with this Agreement. If we determine, in our sole discretion, that you have violated this Agreement, we may limit or terminate access to the Service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this Agreement (including those set forth in Section 6 of this Agreement).

You will be responsible for any use of your account by your household, including compliance with this section.”

Hulu Terms of Service

We've been here before with the likes of Netflix in 2023, and it's only going to get worse, I'm afraid.

What Now?

Hulu subscribers have until March 14th to comply with the new guidelines. If you haven't already, you'll soon receive an email from the service informing you of the crackdown on password sharing. It's unclear at the present time how Hulu plans to determine if you've shared your password with someone living in a different location, but it's likely to involve the geo-location technology, which is used to keep you from accessing content from a different region.

It's All About The Money

According to The Verge, the email that some subscribers have received, however, it states that Hulu is “adding limitations on sharing your account outside your household,” which gives the impression that the provider could further follow Netflix's lead by asking for more money to share an account.

Hulu's jumping on the password crackdown bandwagon should be no great surprise since Disney will soon own all of it. And we are certain it won't be the last streaming service to do so. Before the end of 2024, all major streaming services will likely try to clamp down on account-sharing to boost their subscription numbers and, of course, their revenue.

While there are many reasons to share your login details with a friend or family member who doesn't live in the same house as you, regardless of whether it's financial or just being generous, streaming services aren't happy about the practice. Does Hulu's news that it's clamping down on password sharing affect your decision to continue your subscription? If so, let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
