After five heartfelt seasons of navigating love, life, and the charming streets of Serenity, South Carolina, Netflix decided in 2026 to bid farewell to Sweet Magnolias. Fans may want to keep tissues handy—and perhaps pour themselves a comforting glass of sweet tea—because it’s time to say goodbye to Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue. Still, there’s reason to look ahead: the creative team is already working on a new story for viewers to enjoy.

The End of Serenity—For Now

Sweet Magnolias, based on Sherryl Woods’ novels, followed the intertwined lives, joys, and ups-and-downs of lifelong friends. Set in the fictional town of Serenity, the series starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Maddie, with Brooke Elliott, Heather Headley, Jamie Lynn Spears, Logan Allen, Anneliese Judge, Justin Bruening, and Dion Johnstone rounding out the main cast. Their chemistry made Serenity feel like home to viewers across the globe.

As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Netflix canceled the romantic drama after five seasons. Despite the end, Netflix cited pride in the work of the cast and crew, noting that Sweet Magnolias earned 100 million views and appeared on the Global Weekly Top 10 list 14 times across more than 60 countries.

A Heartfelt Farewell

The Sweet Magnolias writers posted a farewell on Instagram to their loyal fans:

“All grand adventures must eventually end. And here, dear friends, is where ours does. SWEET MAGNOLIAS is now complete with five seasons streaming on Netflix.”

The message also assured viewers that “Serenity is for you” and encouraged everyone involved to “be proud of what you’ve done.” The connection went far beyond the screen.

New Beginnings: Ladies of the House

With Serenity’s story complete, series creator Sheryl J. Anderson and star JoAnna Garcia Swisher are set to reunite for a new Netflix drama, Ladies of the House. If you’re missing the energy of Sweet Magnolias, this might be your next favorite.

This upcoming show is loosely based on Lauren Edmondson’s 2021 novel, subtitled “A Retelling of Sense and Sensibility.” Ladies of the House centers on a family winery owner who dies unexpectedly, leaving his wife and two adult daughters to run the business and navigate longstanding differences.

Garcia Swisher will executive produce alongside her producing partner Kate Gordon, with Woods stepping in as executive producer and showrunner. On the announcement, Garcia Swisher said:

“From the moment I read Lauren Edmondson’s Ladies of the House, I fell completely in love with Daisy, Cricket, and Wallis: their relationships, their messiness, their strength, and most of all, their heart. I am beyond excited to continue to tell meaningful, female-driven stories alongside the incredible Sheryl Anderson, and to bring this to life through our production company, Rolling Clover, and with our wonderful partners at Black Label. Netflix has been my creative home for the past seven years, and I couldn’t imagine a better place, or a better team, to tell this story.”

What’s Next for Sweet Magnolias Fans?

Sweet Magnolias has streamed its final chapter, but its impact endures. All five seasons remain available to watch on Netflix for anyone seeking more time in Serenity. Fans can also look forward to Ladies of the House, which promises more heartfelt, women-led storytelling from familiar creative voices.

Whether you’re revisiting favorite moments in Serenity or anticipating new drama among the grapevines, one thing is clear: for the Sweet Magnolias community, goodbyes are just another beginning.
