Revisiting the Past on Google Street View
Browsing Google Street View, it's common to come across images that are years old. Not every neighborhood is updated frequently, and some streets still display snapshots taken many years ago. While that can disappoint users looking for the latest view, for some, those archived images offer surprising and touching glimpses into the past. Becky Turner, 29, found herself experiencing this firsthand.
According to People, Becky decided to take part in a TikTok trend inviting users to search for old images of their homes on Google Street View. She grew up in Orange, Connecticut, where her parents and younger sister still live. Her goal was simple: to find a snapshot of her sister riding her bicycle in front of their house.
An Unexpected Reunion With Sonny
While scrolling through the old images, Becky unexpectedly came across a photo from 2011. To her astonishment, the picture showed Sonny, her childhood Golden Retriever, playing on the lawn and seemingly fascinated by the Google Maps car passing in front of the house.
The discovery stirred deep emotions. It was more than just an old image—it felt almost like a sign from Sonny, who had since passed away. “Seeing a new photo of him, one I didn't even know existed, made me feel like he was alive for a moment,” Becky told People. “It was a new experience with him that I was lucky enough to have, and it made it really special. Even after his death, I'm still discovering that he finds ways to let me know he's still here.”
Other Nostalgic Surprises
The virtual exploration brought more than just Sonny back into Becky's memories. She also spotted images of Sparky, the family cat, who lived to age 20 before passing away. The same Street View images included the magnolia tree that once stood in the front yard—one she and her sister used to climb when they were children. Reflecting on the moment, Becky said, “That discovery immediately made me burst into tears. I was already very moved by the nostalgia of seeing my little sister on her bike, our cat Sparky, and the magnolia tree that once stood in the front yard—the very one we used to climb as kids. I was so surprised that the photo of him was so perfect.”
