The White House's official mobile app, despite a list of well-documented security and privacy issues, is now being automatically installed on Department of Homeland Security employee devices.
DHS told employees in an internal email that the app is a convenient way to access White House communications, announcements, executive actions, speeches, livestreams, and other updates. The app itself launched back in March and was pitched as a means for Americans to get direct, unfiltered access to the administration.

The White House app is the official mobile software from the Executive Office of the President. It's currently listed on the Google Play Store with a 4.3-star rating from around 2,000 reviews.
It launched in March 2026 with the purpose of offering real-time breaking news alerts on executive actions and national priorities. It's as small as 16MB and requires Android 7 or later.

The app is now spreading beyond voluntary downloads and into mandatory installs on government devices. The Federal Aviation Administration started automatically installing it on all FAA-issued iPhones and iPads. More recently, the Department of Homeland Security told employees it would be automatically installed on all DHS-issued devices as well.
The issues found with the app initially center on security and privacy. For one, it loads code from third-party repositories instead of relying on certified cloud services. If the repository gets compromised, the malicious or broken code may be pulled into the app.
It also reportedly uses code from Elfsight, a Russia-founded software kit company. Elfsight was previously responsible for an incident that exposed some White House staffers' personal information, which the administration described as a vulnerability on the company's side. They maintained that they passed a full security review before being approved for use.

Another issue is that the app reportedly shares user data, including time zone, IP address, and phone model, with third-party services, raising privacy concerns for ordinary users beyond the security questions tied to government deployment. For an everyday user, these issues and rollouts don't concern or apply to you.

The White House app is available on the Google Play Store. It uses a navy blue theme throughout and the interface offers a search bar for news or photos near the top. Navigation across the bottom offers five tabs, including Home, News, Live, Social, and Gallery.
Home shows the main landing page plus scrollable cards for different sections. News surfaces articles and written updates, while Live is for live streams, presidential addresses, press briefings, and events as they happen.

Social pulls together posts from the administration's official accounts across X, Truth Social, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook into one feed. Finally, the Gallery tab holds photos capturing historic moments and daily White House life.
Featured in the photo gallery is an album for the UFC Freedom 250 Fan Fest showing the Ellipse near the White House decked out for the event. It also contains images of fireworks beside the Washington Monument, the event's main stage, a UFC championship belt, and stunt performers from Travis Pastrana's Nitro Circus team jumping motorcycles over a Marine honor guard.
