Pascal Laugier and His Chilling Return
Back in 2018, “Ghostland” took audiences and critics by surprise. Directed by Pascal Laugier, who is also known for “Martyrs,” widely regarded as one of the most influential French horror films, “Ghostland” starred Crystal Reed and French superstar Mylène Farmer. Audiences around the world were shocked by its terrifying story, set inside a cursed house. Now, fans of Laugier’s signature blend of suspense and horror have something new to look forward to: Laugier has reunited with screenwriter David Birke for his next feature.
David Birke: Bringing Horror Credentials
David Birke is responsible for scripts for celebrated films such as “Elle,” starring Isabelle Huppert, and “Benedetta” with Virginie Efira. While Birke's career spans decades and a range of genres, he has also proven his ability to deliver fear, as seen in films like “13 Sins” and “Slender Man.” Given his track record, it’s no surprise Laugier tapped him to write the screenplay for their new collaboration.
“Nocturnal”: A Different Kind of Vampire Story
According to Deadline, the new film, titled “Nocturnal,” is set in 1943. The story follows a group of refugees escaping Vichy France, attempting a perilous crossing of the English Channel. Their journey takes a horrific turn when they're stranded on a deserted island—one haunted by an immortal supernatural entity. Laugier has expressed admiration for Birke's script and their creative partnership.
“David's script is the most powerful and original story I’ve read in a very long time. It's an ideal horror story that combines a truly terrifying plot with complex, deeply moving characters. The audacity of the story amazed me, and I think it's because David, like me, is a devoted fan of genre cinema,” Laugier told Deadline.
In the same interview, Laugier revealed that “Nocturnal” is a vampire film, but with a fresh perspective.
“I've seen hundreds and hundreds of vampire films in my life, but I've never seen one like ‘Nocturnal.' Creating a totally new take on a myth… that's an irresistible temptation for me as a filmmaker,” he said.
Fans of horror and genre cinema have plenty of reason for anticipation.
