The Boroughs: A Return to Sci-Fi for the Duffers
Since Stranger Things took off, Netflix’s collaboration with the Duffer brothers has consistently surprised audiences. Their latest project, The Boroughs, marks a shift: this time, the focus moves from teens to seniors, tapping into a different slice of fantastic storytelling.
A Desert Mystery Sets the Stage
The Boroughs was co-created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (best known for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance). The story is set in a quiet senior community nestled in the New Mexico desert, where Alfred Molina plays Sam Cooper, a newcomer who arrives with a sense of suspicion. Calm doesn’t last long. According to the synopsis, “Something monstrous is haunting the carefully manicured walkways of the community.” Sam and the other residents must band together to face this frightening unknown—proving that retirement communities can be anything but quiet.
Stranger Things Energy? Fans Think So
Fans quickly spotted similarities to Stranger Things, and social media has run with it. Comments on YouTube include:
“It’s Stranger Things for the AARP crowd!”
Another viewer chimed in:
“Elderly Stranger Things… I’m in!”
However, there’s no official word of any narrative tie to Stranger Things. As much as people want to link each Duffer project to their flagship series—especially when monsters or an Amblin-like mood are involved—no direct connection is being made. If this was a real spin-off, it’s safe to say Netflix would be marketing it heavily as such.
Big Names and a Streaming Date
The cast includes standout veterans like Ed Begley Jr., Jane Kaczmarek, and Dee Wallace. The Boroughs premiered on Netflix May 21, 2026. Whether you’re nostalgic for the Duffers’ early work or just hoping for chills that break the mold, this was a series worth marking on the calendar.
