Netflix’s Broader Plan for Narnia
Netflix has held the rights to all the Narnia books since 2018 and has been aiming to build a complete universe combining films and series. With “The Magician’s Nephew,” the platform is looking to bring C.S. Lewis’s stories back to a new generation of viewers.
“The Magician’s Nephew”: New Release Dates
The release plan for “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” has shifted. The film, originally slated for late 2026, is now set to premiere in U.S. theaters on February 12, 2027, for a three-week run. It will debut on Netflix on April 2, 2027. Early IMAX screenings are set to begin on February 10.
This delay is considerable for director Greta Gerwig, whose last project, “Barbie,” grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide. After three years of development and with filming having begun in August 2025, this adaptation of the saga’s first book carries a reported production budget of about $200 million.
Project partners say the schedule change is meant to allow a wider theatrical release and extra time to refine visual effects. IMAX is collaborating on the film’s release and highlights the extended IMAX run. Previous Narnia adaptations between 2005 and 2010 were produced by Disney and 20th Century Fox. With this new direction, Netflix hopes to revive the franchise for younger audiences.
International Releases Face Legal Barriers
There’s no certainty that the U.S. release model will be used in other countries, especially France. French media laws complicate simultaneous theater and streaming releases. Regulations require about a year between theatrical and Netflix releases. A temporary cinema visa from the National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image (CNC) can allow limited screenings, though it is strictly limited to 500 showings over two days—a system that previously drew criticism during the release of “Kaizen” by Inoxtag in September 2024.
Cast and Creative Team
The cast includes Emma Mackey as the White Witch, with Daniel Craig, Carey Mulligan, and Meryl Streep in supporting roles. Mark Ronson, who worked with Gerwig on “Barbie,” is composing the film’s score.
“I was a child when I first read ‘The Magician’s Nephew,’ and I fell in love with this improbable and completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia into being,” Greta Gerwig told Tudum, Netflix’s media outlet. “I never knew I would become a director, but the idea of a universe created by music has stayed with me. It’s the honor of a lifetime to be able to imagine it in my own way.”
Envisioned as the beginning of a franchise that could reach up to eight films, “The Magician’s Nephew” serves as a prequel to “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” Set in Victorian London, it follows two children, Digory and Polly, who discover magic rings allowing them to journey to other worlds. Their explorations accidentally free the witch Jadis, who becomes the saga’s central villain, and trigger a threat to a newly created universe they must attempt to save.
Could they not just stop it indefinitely?
It appears to be so far from source material that there is no real point in it being a reboot/remake.
