Behind the 3D Magic: When Billie Met Cameron
Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) is Billie Eilish’s second concert film, following 2021’s unique and partly animated Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles. For this project, Eilish, age 24, teamed up with legendary director James Cameron, now 71. Together, they co-directed the film, pulling from Eilish’s four sold-out shows at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, UK, held last year.
Cameron, known for pushing cinematic technology forward, shot all four concerts using tiny 3D cameras. Eilish was touring in support of her critically acclaimed fourth album, also titled Hit Me Hard and Soft, which lends its name to the film.
A Premiere to Remember
On premiere night in London, Leicester Square was buzzing. According to the BBC, fans packed every window and balcony, erupting into deafening screams as Eilish arrived. Cameron, who attended the premiere as well, joked, “They didn’t do that for me!”
The Inspiration for 3D: A Family Conversation
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast in January, Cameron shared the story behind the 3D idea. “I was talking to Billie’s mom, Maggie, who’s really into a lot of the same food choices and sustainability issues that my wife, Suzy, and I are,” Cameron explained. “I said, ‘Maggie, why aren’t we shooting Billie’s tour in 3D? It’d be amazing!’”
Cameron also revealed that Maggie Baird—actor, songwriter, and founder of the nonprofit Support + Feed—was coming on board as an executive producer on a sequel to his 2018 documentary, The Game Changers.
Music, Values, and Plant-Based Burritos
Eilish is a ten-time Grammy Award-winning artist, a longtime vegan, and a vocal advocate for environmental and social justice. Cameron, whose filmography includes around 40 titles like Titanic, Aliens, and the Avatar franchise, is also known for his plant-based diet and environmental advocacy.
Their shared values spilled over into the Manchester shows. The venue, Co-op Live Arena, reported that offering a fully plant-based menu during Eilish’s headline performances reduced food-related emissions by an impressive 47 percent. Instead of standard arena fare, fans enjoyed options like plant-based burgers, hot dogs, saucy fries, and the specialty “Billie Burrito,” packed with chipotle-spiced vegan mince, coriander-and-lime rice, charred peppers, onions, potatoes, refried beans, and salsa—all wrapped in a tortilla.
With Billie’s creative fire and Cameron’s technological imagination, Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) brings the vibe of a live Eilish show to the big screen in a way fans—and the planet—can celebrate.
