Ready to be surprised? Starting today, Netflix subscribers can watch Franck Dubosc trade comedy for suspense in the French thriller “Un ours dans le Jura.” This marks a dramatic and unexpected evolution for the well-known actor, and challenges what audiences might expect from him on screen. Here’s a closer look at this film, its dark undertones, and what it means in France when a comic star attempts their own “Tchao Pantin.”

Franck Dubosc’s Surprising Transformation

Following two Gaumont comedies—Tout le monde debout (“Rolling to You”) and Rumba la vie—actor-director Franck Dubosc returned to theaters in 2024 with Un ours dans le Jura (“A Bear in the Jura Mountains”). Unlike his usual fare, this film is a “rural western” with clear inspiration from the Coen brothers, and its unapologetically dark tone caught audiences off guard. With its recent arrival on Netflix, it’s an opportunity to revisit a movie that enabled Dubosc to achieve what in French cinema is called a “Tchao Pantin” moment, and that earned him the César Award for Best Original Screenplay.

A Fatal Accident, A Hidden Fortune

The story centers on Michel (Dubosc) and Cathy (Laure Calamy), a couple worn down by years together and money problems. Their relationship is distant, almost silent. That changes abruptly when Michel swerves to avoid a bear and crashes his car, killing the two people in the other vehicle. The crash leaves them with two bodies and €2 million in used bills (roughly $2.1 million USD) hidden in the trunk. Suddenly, their broken silence comes with new dangers—and new secrets.

What Is “Doing Your Tchao Pantin”?

In France, “faire son Tchao Pantin” describes the moment when a comic actor deliberately shifts to a much darker role, breaking away from their established image. The phrase references the 1983 film Tchao Pantin, in which comic icon Coluche took on a dramatic part at odds with his comedic persona. Actors typically choose this path after years of similar roles, hoping to prove their range—but it also risks alienating their established audience.

This career move doesn’t always succeed. For example, actors Dany Boon and Michaël Youn each tried their own dramatic turns (in Joyeux Noël and La Traversée, respectively), but despite their strong efforts, audiences felt bewildered and both actors eventually returned to comedic parts. On the other hand, some performers—like Jean Dujardin, Virginie Efira, and Alain Chabat—have managed to successfully transition to dramatic acting.

Franck Dubosc anticipated the risk of alienating his fans with the film’s dark themes. As he said in the movie’s press notes:

I’m aware some scenes will make people uncomfortable; sometimes I tried to soften them, for example by using music to lighten the mood. I know my audience, and I accept that some viewers might struggle with what I’m showing them.

Recognizing he was mainly known for broad comedies like the Camping series, Dubosc carefully crafted a film balancing both offbeat humor and social thriller without letting either dominate. This blend allowed him to shift genres and acting styles with minimal shock to viewers.

As a character both flawed and capable of difficult choices, Franck Dubosc proved he could write and perform any role—without losing acceptance from French audiences. It’s understandable he described this experience as an “emancipation.” So, rather than simply saying he succeeded in his “Tchao Pantin,” it’s time to say: hats off to the artist.
