This year, Xiaomi is leaning harder than ever into photography with the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and unlike previous generations, the hardware changes actually back up the marketing.
The headline upgrades are imaging, battery chemistry, and a surprisingly practical set of performance improvements rather than cosmetic spec bumps.
Design and build
Both phones refine Xiaomi’s minimalist look with flatter frames and narrower bezels.
The Ultra remains the statement piece at 8.29mm and ~218g, while the standard model is noticeably lighter at 191g. Both use the new Guardian Structure with reinforced glass and IP68 protection.
It’s the familiar “Ultra is camera first, regular is balanced flagship” split, but closer than before.
Display

Each model uses an LTPO OLED panel with 1–120Hz refresh rate and up to 3,500 nits peak brightness.
The Ultra adds HyperRGB subpixel tuning aimed at clarity and efficiency, not just brightness. In practice, this means less power draw at the same luminance level — something Xiaomi clearly designed around the larger camera module and sustained recording workloads.
Performance and battery

Both run Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 paired with LPDDR5X and UFS 4.1 storage.
More interesting is the battery direction:
- Xiaomi 17: 6,330mAh, 100W wired, 50W wireless
- Xiaomi 17 Ultra: 6,000mAh, 90W wired, 50W wireless
Instead of chasing thinness, Xiaomi is prioritising endurance — and the silicon-content battery is what enables that capacity without making the phones thicker.
Cameras: where the real work happened

The partnership with Leica Camera AG moves from tuning to co-development.
The Xiaomi 17 uses a large Light Fusion 950 sensor and a floating telephoto, while the Ultra introduces a 1-inch-class LOFIC sensor and a 200MP optical zoom module with a mechanical zoom range.

The Ultra also shoots 4K 120fps log video and Dolby Vision across lenses — clearly targeting hybrid creators rather than casual shooters.

Verdict
Xiaomi didn’t try to out-spec competitors everywhere; instead, it focused on camera reliability and battery longevity.
The result feels less like a spec race entry and more like a creator-focused flagship pair, especially the Ultra, which is edging closer to replacing a compact camera rather than competing with another smartphone.
