Swiss minimalist phone maker Punkt. has unveiled the MC03, the latest evolution of its privacy-centric smartphone philosophy. Made in Europe and powered by its custom AphyOS platform, the MC03 doubles down on a simple idea: modern smartphone features shouldn’t require users to give up control of their personal data.

Rather than bolting privacy on after the fact, Punkt. positions MC03 as a premium device, with data ownership, security, and intentional use as the default. It follows the MC02’s subscription-based model, but refines the experience with updated hardware, a more sustainable design, and deeper integrations with trusted privacy partners.

Privacy by design, not by promise

At the heart of the MC03 is AphyOS, Punkt.’s hardened Android-based operating system designed to eliminate tracking, profiling, hidden services, and background data leakage. There’s no bloatware here, no invisible telemetry, and no reliance on advertising-driven business models.

Instead, users get a clearly defined two-space system that makes privacy tangible rather than abstract.

Vault is the secure enclave. It hosts only Punkt.-approved, privacy-focused apps and presents them in a calm, distraction-free interface, with privacy protections enabled by default. This is where the MC03 feels most distinct from mainstream Android phones—less noise, fewer interruptions, and far tighter control over what data ever leaves the device.

Wild Web is the second space. It allows users to install any app they choose, but with visible safeguards and granular permission controls designed to prevent silent data triangulation or unauthorized data flows. The key difference is transparency: users can see what an app wants, decide what it gets, and change that decision at any time.

Trusted partners, integrated securely

With the MC03, Punkt. is also expanding its privacy-focused ecosystem. Secure messaging service Threema returns, joined now by Proton, whose services are deeply integrated into the Vault environment.

That includes Proton Mail, Calendar, Drive, VPN, and Pass—each running in a space designed to minimise data exposure rather than monetise it. The partnership is a natural fit: both companies are part of the broader Swiss tech movement that upends the dominant model. You don’t pay with your data; you pay to keep it.

Proton founder Andy Yen frames it as restoring choice to a market long dominated by two platforms built around surveillance economics. The MC03 positions itself as a credible alternative for users who want modern functionality without surrendering privacy by default.

Premium hardware, built for longevity

Unlike many niche privacy phones, the MC03 doesn’t compromise on core hardware. It’s manufactured at Gigaset’s German facility, with an emphasis on quality, repairability, and sustainability.

Key hardware highlights include a 120Hz OLED HDR display, a removable 5,200mAh battery, IP68 water- and dust-resistance, and a 64MP main camera. There’s also a bank-grade Secure Element onboard, reinforcing the phone’s security credentials at the hardware level.

Punkt. has clearly aimed to ensure that choosing privacy doesn’t mean settling for outdated or underpowered components.

Practical tools for real-world use

Beyond the OS architecture, the MC03 includes features designed for everyday digital life. Digital Nomad, Punkt.’s built-in VPN, protects connectivity on the move without relying on third-party apps or complex configuration.

Ledger adds another layer of control by allowing users to define app-specific privacy levels, ranging from unrestricted access to a total lockdown. Unusually, it also introduces a Carbon Reduction feature, providing visibility into the energy impact of installed apps and control over how aggressively they run in the background—an approach that links privacy to sustainability rather than treating them as separate concerns.

Pricing, subscription, and availability

The Punkt. MC03 is priced at £610 / €699 / CHF699. The purchase includes 12 months of AphyOS subscription from Apostrophy, after which continued use requires an active plan.

Monthly pricing is set at £8.99 / €9.99 / CHF9.99, with discounted bundles available at launch. A three-year subscription offers a 45% saving, while a five-year option reduces the standard monthly rate by 60%. Subscriptions can be cancelled at any time.

The MC03 is now available for pre-order in Europe, with deliveries scheduled to begin at the end of January.

Verdict

The MC03 doesn’t try to out-spec mainstream flagships or lure users with AI gimmicks. Instead, it makes a clear, principled argument: privacy should be the default state of a smartphone, not a setting buried three menus deep. For users increasingly uncomfortable with surveillance-driven platforms, the Punkt. MC03 feels less like a niche experiment and more like a deliberate, premium alternative that finally aligns modern hardware with genuine data control.
