AI Finds Its Way Into Walking and Cycling
The world of GPS navigation was starting to look a little lopsided—drivers were already enjoying hands-free navigation powered by Gemini's conversational prowess, but pedestrians and cyclists were, let’s face it, left curbside. Fortunately, Google is bridging the gap with the rollout of Gemini for walking and cycling navigation in Maps.
Gemini: Your Personal Guide (and More!)
Google has officially announced Gemini’s arrival for walkers and cyclists on Maps. Now, when you’re out exploring by foot or on your bike, Gemini can step in as your personal tour guide. Want to know what neighborhood you’re in? Easy:
“When you explore and navigate with Maps, Gemini can become your personal tour guide. Just ask: ‘OK Google, what neighborhood am I in?' Feeling hungry? Follow up with ‘What are the best restaurants nearby?' and Gemini will suggest options along your route, based on the most up-to-date and comprehensive real-world information from Maps,” says Alphabet's subsidiary.
The result? Whether you’re strolling or cycling, Gemini offers real-time insights, recommends places of interest, and even whips up suggestions for a bite to eat based on your actual, current surroundings. No more guesswork—just ask and you shall receive!
Hands-Free Help, Enhanced Safety
On foot, Gemini acts as a genuine tour guide (without expecting a tip). On a bike, it goes the extra mile, handling tasks to keep your hands exactly where they belong: on the handlebars. Cyclists can engage in conversations with Gemini without ever touching their device. The AI-powered assistant can:
- Give you your estimated arrival time
- Send a text via Google Messages on your behalf
- Check your next meeting time by consulting Google Calendar
All designed to let you keep your eyes on the road—and not on your screen.
Available Now Across Devices
Gemini for walking and cycling navigation is available right now on both iOS and Android. This launch is another showcase of Google’s AI strength and the speed at which it can roll out innovative features. And let’s not forget: Waze, also developed by Google, benefits from Gemini as well. Thanks to Conversational Reporting, users can now report incidents by voice alone—no typing, just talking.
