After months of frustration, Android users can finally let out a sigh of relief: the endlessly annoying screen rotation bug during calls is over, thanks to a long-awaited Google update. If you've found yourself holding up your phone like a pro, only for the display to flip sideways with all the elegance of a confused weather vane, you're certainly not alone!

The Pixel Phone Twister: How the Bug Ruined Calls

For several months, an unpredictable bug threw a wrench into the smooth experience of Android calls. Users reported their screens randomly flipping to landscape mode during calls—even when the phone was held perfectly upright. This hiccup made conversations awkward, sometimes even downright maddening, especially for speakerphone enthusiasts. Pixel users were hit hardest, but other Android smartphones running the Google Phone app weren't spared either. Until now, there was no straightforward solution in sight.

Material 3 Makeover: Not All Rosy for Android

Since the rollout of Android 16, Google has been giving its main apps a facelift with the Material 3 Expressive design—think bolder colors, clearer buttons, and a completely revamped interface hierarchy. Apps like Gboard (Google's keyboard) and Settings were among the early recipients. While the new look is certainly more vibrant, it hasn't been all smooth sailing. Some features temporarily went missing or malfunctioned; for instance, the ‘swipe to dismiss an alarm' gesture in Clock vanished—only to make a comeback later. The Phone app also endured its own share of mishaps with the redesign, and it was this update that unleashed the notorious screen rotation bug mid-call.

Google's Update: Fixing the Unpredictable Flip

After numerous complaints, Google has finally rolled out an update to squash this frustrating bug. There's now a new setting: by default, it locks the display in portrait mode during calls, sparing you from those involuntary and annoying flips to landscape. If you prefer your phone to keep its acrobatic skills, you can always change it back:

  • Open the Phone app
  • Tap Menu > Settings > Display Options
  • Uncheck “Keep in portrait mode”

This fix is currently being deployed in the stable version of the Google Phone app, and it's available for all compatible devices—regardless of your Android version. It’s a small tweak, but it makes a big difference in the comfort of your calls. Users can now enjoy auto-rotate again, minus the unplanned screen gymnastics.

Larger Implications & Ongoing Improvements

This simple fix is part of Google's ongoing effort to adjust and refine the Material 3 interface, listening carefully to user feedback. As with every big design update, some speed bumps are expected, but Google seems to be working fast to smooth things over. Other similar bug fixes might be on the horizon in the coming weeks. Stay tuned—and if your screen still insists on breakdancing during calls, perhaps double-check you’ve got the latest update!
