It's a bad day for T1 Mobile LLC as they’ll wish they never slapped the ‘Trump’ name on their imaginary phone. It’s been six months since the device was announced, and yet no model has been shipped. Also, there's no confirmed delivery date and inconsistent marketing now forces us to ponder if it's all a big scam. Is it?
Congress is calling for Trump Mobile accountability
11 Democratic lawmakers, including Elizabeth Warren of the Democratic Party, have recently asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate the mobile virtual network operator Trump Mobile for possible false advertising and deceptive practices.
We wrote to you26 in August requesting your plan to meet the responsibilities of your agency and mitigate the enormous conflicts of interest posed by President Trump’s control of the regulatory mechanisms that govern his business, and we received no response from the FTC. The American people deserve to know that consumer protection laws apply equally to all businesses, regardless of political connections. The FTC’s response to any violations of consumer protection law by Trump Mobile will serve as a critical test of the FTC’s independence and commitment to its mission of “protecting the public from deceptive or unfair business practices.
Congress letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
The official letter details how Trump Mobile launched in mid-2025 as a virtual mobile carrier, the same way Google Fi uses other carriers’ networks.
The Trump family didn't actually run it, but a company called T1 Mobile LLC. They licensed the Trump name for branding, and even Trump’s sons promoted it. The business itself was basically a reseller wrapped in political branding.
The service offered only one plan at approximately $48 a month for 20GB of data. It also advertised no credit checks to attract customers who would normally struggle to qualify with bigger carriers.
Trump Mobile also teased the Trump Phone, which they claimed was manufactured in the USA. What's odd is that the country doesn’t have the infrastructure to manufacture mass-market smartphones at scale.
They were allegedly selling refurbished iPhones and Samsung devices imported from China and Korea, which is deceptive and violates FTC rules. President Trump himself admitted that the company's claim wasn’t true, while hopefully stating that someday phones could be made in the country.
Are legal troubles ahead for Trump Mobile?
If this whole saga with Trump Mobile turns out to be a scam, its parent company will be staring at a legal disaster from multiple sides. The FTC may fine them for deceptive marketing, force full refunds, and even block them from running similar businesses in the future.
State attorneys general could open their own investigations and flag it as criminal fraud added with class-action lawsuits from customers. The financial fallout alone would be enormous.
So far, they've already brushed up against overlapping categories of misconduct that regulators take very seriously. The company is yet to make a statement in its defence.
