Storms on the Screen: More Than Just a Gimmick
Driving through a sudden downpour can quickly go from inconvenient to dangerous. Bhutani, who’s no stranger to long drives and unpredictable weather, was motivated by this reality to install the Météo & Radar app—known as Weather & Radar in English—on his car’s Android Auto system. He wanted a real-time look at weather disturbances before getting behind the wheel.
Since then, his car’s central display has offered more than just navigation or music controls; it’s become a way to monitor shifting skies ahead.
No Tweaks Needed: Weather & Radar Is Android Auto Ready
There’s no need to modify Android Auto to use this app. Weather & Radar has been officially compatible with Google’s platform since 2023. After installation on your smartphone, the app shows up automatically among those available on your car’s main screen. It provides live maps showing precipitation, cloud formations, and lightning strikes, along with dedicated views for wind and temperature.
The radar tracks your vehicle’s location in real time. On some systems, it can even split the screen with your navigation app, so you don’t have to choose between checking your route or the weather. According to Bhutani’s October 8 article, he still relies mostly on Google Maps or Organic Maps for guidance, but consults the weather before departing or during breaks—especially when the sky begins to look ominous.
Beyond Forecasts: Real-Time Radar for Smarter Choices
The real advantage comes when radar shows what an hourly forecast alone can’t. Sometimes, a predicted rainy evening brings long periods of calm between storms. By watching the movement of rain cells in real time, drivers can see whether a heavy downpour is about to intersect their route or if waiting a bit will mean dodging it entirely.
On extended trips, a rest stop might last a few minutes longer if an approaching thunderstorm is visible on the radar, or you might decide to head out immediately if a squall is closing in. Real-time radar turns guesswork into informed planning, giving you a clear edge against unexpected weather.
Customizing the Dashboard: More Than Just Forecasts
Android Auto’s flexibility means enthusiasts can go even further, combining apps and custom data. For example, with tools like AA Torque and Torque Pro connected via OBD2 adapters, some users display live vehicle info right on the car screen. Even without such advanced setups, having weather radar available helps drivers anticipate hazardous conditions before setting out—a feature that would be welcome in more in-car systems and GPS apps.
Whether it’s rain, lightning, or sunshine, real-time radar on your dash makes road trips safer and a little easier to plan.
