After weeks of silence and fan speculation, it’s official – Alien Earth is coming back for a second season on Disney+. The long-awaited renewal was announced this week, marking the return of one of 2025’s most talked-about sci-fi dramas.
A long wait for a well-earned renewal
When the season finale aired on 24 September, viewers were left with more questions than answers. For a while, even series creator Noah Hawley remained vague about the show’s future. Now, fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief: the green light has been given, and production for the next chapter is set to begin in London next year.
It’s a major shift from season one, which was filmed in Thailand. The announcement was shared on the series’ official social media channels through a short video – a fittingly mysterious teaser for a universe as dark and unpredictable as Alien Earth.
Noah Hawley returns with a new deal
Behind the camera, Noah Hawley isn’t just coming back for season two; he’s also signed a new multi-year agreement with FX and Disney Entertainment Television. Reports suggest the deal is worth several million dollars, giving the creator of Fargo and Legion the chance to develop multiple projects under the same studio umbrella.
FX chairman John Landgraf expressed his enthusiasm for the ongoing partnership, saying that working with Hawley over the past decade has been “a privilege”. He praised the showrunner’s “remarkable originality” and storytelling craft, adding that the team is “eager to begin the next season of Alien Earth, along with other exciting projects in development.”
For viewers, that means one thing: expect more ambitious world-building and high-concept storytelling – the kind of creative risks that have become Hawley’s trademark.
What’s next for Alien Earth?
The series, set in the year 2120, takes place two years before the events of Ridley Scott’s Alien. By then, Earth is ruled by five massive corporations. Humans coexist with cyborgs and synthetic beings, and a new generation of humanoid hybrids—robots equipped with human consciousness—pushes the boundaries of life and mortality.
At the heart of the story is Wendy, a prototype hybrid whose creation sparks both scientific wonder and existential fear. When a derelict spaceship called the USCSS Maginot crashes on Earth after an interstellar voyage, the hybrids encounter a terrifying new form of life – one that threatens to upend everything they thought they knew about humanity and survival.
Season one ended on a chilling note, leaving fans desperate for answers about Wendy’s fate and the true nature of the alien threat. With filming due to start soon, speculation is already building about what season two will bring – and whether it will steer the show back to the horror roots that made the Alien franchise iconic.
A stellar cast returns
The first season’s ensemble featured an impressive lineup, including Sydney Chandler, Timothy Olyphant, Alex Lawther, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, and Babou Ceesay. While casting details for the next season remain under wraps, many of these actors are expected to reprise their roles.
As one fan put it on Reddit after the announcement, “If season two can balance the existential dread with the raw tension of the original Alien films, we might be looking at something truly special.”
The challenge ahead
Though Alien Earth drew praise for its visual design and bold ideas, some viewers felt the later episodes faltered under the weight of their own ambition. This new season, therefore, faces the challenge of refining its tone – keeping the philosophical depth while recapturing the nerve-shredding suspense that defines the Alien legacy.
There’s no official release date yet, but with cameras set to roll in 2026, fans won’t have to wait forever to return to the dark, corporate-controlled future of Alien Earth. Until then, all episodes of the first season remain available on Disney+ – perfect for a rewatch before the subsequent descent into the unknown.
