Snapchat’s disappearing messages are great for privacy, but less so when you realise you’ve lost a photo or video you actually wanted to save. If you’ve ever had that sinking feeling after a Snap vanishes, don’t panic — there are ways to recover your data and even keep your snaps forever.

Can you get deleted Snaps back?

Technically, once a Snap is viewed and disappears, it’s meant to be gone for good — that’s Snapchat’s whole philosophy: “Delete is our default.” But there are a few tricks that might help you retrieve what’s still stored behind the scenes.

First, remember that Snaps you send are briefly saved on Snapchat’s servers. If you remove the time limit before sending or saving the Snap to Memories, you can view it again later. You can also set certain videos to loop — another simple way to preserve them. If it’s a Snap you created using the in-app camera, it might already be tucked away in your Memories unless you deleted it manually.

How to request your Snapchat data

Even if you think something’s lost, you may be able to retrieve it by requesting a data download from Snapchat. This includes archived Memories, Snap history, filters you’ve used, and even song recognition history via Shazam.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open Snapchat and tap your profile icon
  2. Go to Settings (top right gear icon)
  3. Scroll down to My Data under “Account Actions”
  4. Enter your login info again if prompted.
  5. Choose a date range — yesterday, last 7 days, 6 months, or even a full year.
  6. Tap Submit Request

Snapchat will compile your data and send a download link via email when it's ready. Inside the zip file, you'll find HTML and JSON files—open index.html in your browser to explore everything — from saved Snaps to old conversations.

What about lost messages?

Recovering deleted chats is trickier, but not impossible. Some third-party tools, such as DroidKit (Android) or FonePaw (iOS), can scan your device for lingering data. If you’ve backed up your phone to Google Drive or iCloud before messages vanished, restoring that backup might bring them back.

For Android users, try digging through:
Android/data/com.snapchat.android/cache/

You might find .nomedia files — rename them to another extension, and you might just uncover old Snaps.

No trash bin, but a few workarounds

Snapchat doesn’t have a recycle bin like some other apps. Still, that “My Data” section is your best bet for recovering content, especially if you’re trying to avoid third-party tools.

Also, always back up important content outside Snapchat if it matters — whether to your camera roll, Google Photos, or another secure space.

Planning to delete your account? Back it all up first

Thinking of quitting Snapchat? Before you hit delete, be sure to download your full data archive. Once your account is gone, so are your conversations, Snaps, and Memories — and they’re not coming back.

Visit accounts.snapchat.com, log in, click Delete My Account, and follow the prompts. Your account will be deactivated for 30 days, during which you can still change your mind.

Locked out with no email or phone number?

Forgot your login and no longer have access to your email or number? Your best bet is your recovery code, if you saved one. Otherwise, contact Snapchat support directly. You’ll need to provide detailed info about your account — username, creation date, device type — and wait for verification.

Forgot your password?

Check if your browser saved it, or see if an old phone is still logged in. If all else fails, try specialized password recovery software — these tools can sometimes retrieve saved credentials stored locally on your device.

Snapchat may be designed to let things disappear, but that doesn’t mean everything is gone forever. With a few extra steps and the right tools, you might recover that message, photo, or video you thought was lost — and save it for good.

  1. Really helpful breakdown of how Snapchat handles disappearing data! Do you think the app should introduce an optional “trash bin” feature for users who want more control over what gets permanently deleted?
