Motorola is one of the legends of the cellphone domain. If you want to get historical, Motorola is literally the pioneer of cellphones. The company remained dominant in the feature phone era, but had a bit of a rough transition into smartphones. However, the company has found its footing entirely and is now cruising along with the rest.

The Motorola Razr clamshell foldables borrows its name from what is arguably the most popular flip phone of all time, and it doesn't put the name to shame, especially this year. The Motorola Razr 60 and Razr 60 Ultra (also known as the Razr (2025) and Razr Ultra in some regions) are killer devices, yet they don't neglect looking pretty at the same time.

In the field of clamshell foldables, Motorola has been coasting along in Samsung's shadow. It was a shame last year, because Motorola arguably made the better phone. However, there should be no doubt about that this year. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 isn't here yet, but I already know Motorola has won this year's battle.

The Design

The Motorola Razr models of this year don't do anything drastic in terms of their major design traits when compared to last year. They still look unarguably sexy, though. In fact, they might be sexier, thanks to new Pantone color options and new back material options.

The Razr 60 Ultra can be gotten with an Alcantara, real wood, leather-inspired, or satin-inspired finish, irrespective of the color. This marks the first time Alcantara is being used on a phone, and it is also the first time we're seeing real wood on a foldable phone. Exotic. The color options are Rio Red, Scarab, Mountain Trail, and Cabaret.

The Razr 60 doesn't get the same premium material options, though you can choose from a leather-inspired, nylon-inspired, or acetate finish. In colors, you can choose from Gibraltar Sea (my favorite), Spring Bud, Parfait Pink, and Lightest Sky. There's IP48 certification, too, which is better than last year's IPX8, giving you the same peace of mind if the phone takes a dip (but not as much if it falls in the sand at the beach).

The Screens

These phones come with similar screens to last year's models, though that was because Motorola already maxed out the spec sheet in that department. However, the Ultra, in particular, does manage to get a few upgrades. One notable one is Gorilla Glass Ceramic, which claims 10x better drop performance than the last generation.

The Hardware

Last year, Motorola had this marketed as the Razr+ in some regions, but this year, it is the Razr Ultra. That's not just because of cleaner naming conventions. The higher-end device really does enough to justify the Ultra tag, especially considering the clamshell foldable landscape as a whole. Unfortunately, rumors of a ridiculous model with 2TB of storage don't seem to have panned out.

The Batteries and Charging

In the battery department, the premium model doesn't cut any corners, giving you a large battery and a fast charging experience, wired or wireless.

  • 4,700mAh battery
  • 68W TurboPower wired charging
  • 30W wireless charging
  • 5W reverse wired charging

With the less expensive device, you get what you pay for, though the drop isn't that significant, to be honest.

  • 4,500mAh battery
  • 30W TurboPower wired charging
  • 15W wireless charging

The Cameras

The Motorola Razr phones for this year both come with a 50MP primary camera, though the sensors behind them are different. Unsurprisingly, the Ultra gets one with a bigger sensor. The better chip also makes 8K/30 and 4K/120 recording possible, while the Razr 60 settles for 4K/30.

The Razr 60 Ultra also comes with a 50MP ultrawide, while the smaller model goes for a 13MP ultrawide. The selfie cameras also differ. The Ultra model completes a hat-trick with another 50MP unit there, and the regular Razr chooses a 32MP unit.

The Pricing and Availability

The Razr (2025) and Razr Ultra (2025) will both be available for pre-order in the US starting on May 7th, and will be available to buy unlocked and from carriers starting May 15th.

The Motorola Razr (2025) will cost $699.99, while the higher-end model will start at a much higher $1,299.99. That's the most expensive we've seen a clamshell launch at.
