The buzz of AI is seeping so much faster into the tech industry nowadays, that Google has finally deemed it necessary for basic consumers to learn more and keep up. Don’t worry, the so-called “Google AI Essentials” course is completely free, although the move itself does cast doubt on the tech giant’s intentions as the one trailing behind the AI race.

Generative AI for Dummies

Launched in April 2024 by Grow with Google, the AI Essentials course theoretically aims to help individuals learn how to make the most of (generative) AI, regardless of their prior experience. It currently consists of five following modules:

  • A comprehensive introduction to AI
  • Tips for maximizing productivity in the workplace
  • Strategies for writing effective prompts
  • Exploration of responsible AI
  • Tactics for staying ahead of the curve (as the technology evolves)

One of the key features of the course is its emphasis on responsible AI use. The development team apparently incorporated a five-point “Checklist for Responsible AI Use” in response to feedback from beta testers, which includes action items like evaluating content before sharing it. Credit where it is due, so effort points for acknowledging this part of AI’s issues at least.

Development Notes and Course Claims

Speaking of how the course was developed and rolled out, the official intro page mentions a “cross-functional effort.” Meaning, each subject matter expert from multiple organizations within Google contributed to the writing and design of course materials. The team also claims to have engaged with partners in the nonprofit, educational, commercial, and government sectors to gather feedback and ensure the course met the needs of a wide range of learners.

According to Google’s claims, the AI Essentials course can help learners save an average of 1.75 hours each day by using generative AI tools, plus having 21 times more opportunities in the form of job postings. We are not sure if these are optimization claims, or simply statistics that are estimated from how generative AI would be used by the layperson. In any case, the specific numbers should be taken with a grain of salt, even if there is indeed a noted increase or improvement within the claimed subjects.

Rollout and Availability

Google's AI Essentials course is available globally in English, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese, with more languages coming soon. The course can be completed in less than 10 hours, making it fairly accessible and efficient as a basic primer for individuals to gain a solid foundation in (generative) AI. Besides, it’s free anyway. Even if it is more of a positional move for subject authority by Google, learners can still use the material to efficiently adapt modern AI tools in their personal or professional lives.

In fact, to support the adoption of AI skills further, the company has also announced a $75 million AI Opportunity Fund through Google.org. This fund will support workforce development and educational organizations across the U.S. as they work to teach AI skills to more than 1 million Americans.
