One thing that a lot of new smartphones have been coming with is satellite connectivity, especially when they're coming from Chinese manufacturers. For now, there hasn't been much support for satellite calls or messaging from mobile carriers in the United States, but that looks bound to change.
Both T-Mobile and AT&T have announced intentions to have satellite messaging ready for users, with T-Mobile significantly ahead in the race. In fact, T-Mobile subscribers may be able to sends texts through satellites in just a matter of months.
T-Mobile Has Partnered With SpaceX To Offer Direct-To-Cell Satellite Functionality
I find it a little hard to count the number of devices that have recently launched with some form of satellite connectivity toted as a major feature. The reason for this is that up until now, specialized hardware has been required inside these smartphones to enable them to connect directly to satellites. Unfortunately, this is yet to be standardized, which is why, for instance, many of these Chinese phones can only connect to satellites in China and nowhere else (though the Pixel 9 is rumored to be getting the same).
However, T-Mobile has partnered with SpaceX to bring satellite capabilities to smartphones through “direct-to-cell” service. What makes this so different from the current implementations of satellite connectivity that we've been seeing is that this doesn't actually need special hardware. It can be deployed on regular devices by seemingly beaming directly to LTE-enabled phones.
This collaboration has been in the works since 2022 and SpaceX has launched new satellites that specifically have this direct-to-cell functionality. Now, T-Mobile users on the Android 15 Beta have noticed that the previously hidden satellite messaging page has now gone live.
The feature isn't live yet, but when it is, you'll be able to text anyone when connected to a satellite, and this will be a huge help when you find yourself in a location with poor coverage. The only thing is that you'll need to be in a place with a clear view of the skies to take advantage of this.
AT&T And AST Mobile Have A Similar Partnership, Though You'll Need To Wait For The “Not-Too-Distant Future”
If you're an AT&T user, weep not, because there's good news for you too. AT&T has just announced a partnership with AST SpaceMobile for a cellular broadband network in the same vein as T-Mobile and SpaceX's partnership. This will also be a direct-to-cell service, essentially. This will give the exact same perks as T-Mobile's service, which means you'll be able to text people even when there isn't a cell tower in sight.
However, unlike T-Mobile's technology which seems ready to go any second now, it is not too sure when AT&T's variant is going to be available for customers. The only word given regarding this service is that it will be available in the “not-too-distant- future”, which could be anywhere from before the end of this year to early 2026. However, with T-Mobile's solution primed to deploy, AT&T should likely have its option ready before the end of the year. In fact, it might also come out ready for the Android 15 launch.
