Verizon Is Increasing Its Smartwatch Plan

Verizon’s 50% smartwatch plan price hike has customers fuming, questioning the value of paying more for a service that’s about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

Verizon, one of the nation's leading wireless carriers, made a huge announcement that it will be increasing the monthly price of its smartwatch data plans by half once June drops. This price hike will affect all customers currently subscribed to the base smartwatch line, with the new monthly cost rising to about half more compared to the current rate.

Public Explanation for the Increase

According to the company's official statement, the reason behind this price increase is to “continue improving [their] industry-leading network and services,” which often is the expected PR move for these companies.

To cover this explanation further, Verizon has assured its customers that despite the higher cost, they will still be able to enjoy all the features and perks associated with their current smartwatch plans, including unlimited 5G and 4G LTE data, as well as unlimited talk and text on capable devices.

For customers who currently benefit from a 50% discount on their smartwatch line, Verizon has stated that they will retain this discount, which will be applied to the new pricing structure. With the discount in place, the monthly charge for the smartwatch plan will increase by a smaller margin compared to those without the discount.

The price increase will be reflected on customers' bills starting with the first billing cycle after June 1, 2024. Verizon has emphasized that no action is required from customers to maintain their current smartwatch plans, as the increase will be automatically applied.

What the Actual Situation Might Be

This announcement comes just a little bit over a month after Verizon raised prices for its best (and now discontinued) unlimited plans. Last mid-January, Verizon notified customers of a $4 per month per line rate hike across its Play More, Do More, Get More, and 5G Start plans, which was offset via an additional 5GB of hotspot data. This update rolled out last March 1st.

As such, the timing of the smartwatch plan price hike has been met with some criticism, with the consensus suggesting that the company may simply be testing the limits of consumer tolerance for price increases. With many customers locked into payment plans for their devices, Verizon may have been betting that the majority will accept the higher costs, rather than go through the hassle of switching carriers.

Then again, other more reasonable explanations might also apply, such as the expanding market saturation for smarwatches, or the ever-growing infrastructure complexity to support such ecosystems. So the real issue would most likely be more complicated than just “corporate greed.”

Will Customers Stick Around?

Unsurprisingly, the news has once again irked many Verizon smartwatch customers, particularly those who are locked into payment plans for their devices. From the Reddit thread that discussed this price hike, the opinions were universally negative, with many users expressing frustration with the limited utility of their cellular-enabled smartwatch, the redundancy of the service, and the craziness of the company asking for even more money.

With Verizon customers having until June 2024 to decide whether they wish to continue paying for their smartwatch data plans at the increased rate, it will be interesting to observe how many opt to keep their plans and how many choose to forgo the added expense. Just how well would stretching the goodwill of your customers go? Based on other similar trends as of late, the eventual outcome doesn’t seem to bode well on the customer side at all.
