Good news for Enterprise edition Samsung tablet owners, especially business entities switching to the latest Galaxy Tab Active5. You will now get software updates for a whopping eight years, starting today! This isn’t just good news for consumers who invested in these latest mobile productivity machines, it can also be a potentially big win for e-waste management.
From Five to Eight Years
Prior to 2024, Samsung's Galaxy Enterprise Edition program was designed to meet the needs of enterprise customers requiring a longer device lifecycle. This included a guaranteed window of up to three years, with five years of security updates and software patches for models like the Galaxy S20, S21, Note 20, Xcover 5, and Tab Active 3. To compare, consumer versions (ineligible for the program) generally receive only 4 years of updates.
While long enough for at least two to three generations of use, these previous policies still left room for improvement when delivering true long-term support for the enterprise segment.
With the latest announcement confirmed in a LinkedIn post by a Netherlands-based Samsung executive (via SamMobile), the company seems to have effectively doubled down on its enterprise update strategy. Yes, eight full years of both security and OS updates for new Enterprise editions of Galaxy tablets. It all starts with the Galaxy Tab Active5, and would presumably continue from this point forward.
An 8-year comprehensive (official) update commitment for even at least software patches is generally unheard of in the Android mobile space, unless it is something very important. We more often see it in the likes of Apple’s older products, such as the iPad Air 2, which had a whopping 8-year software update cycle from 2014 (iOS 8) all the way to 2021 (iPadOS 15).
Maximizing Longevity for Investment
For businesses and organizations, this extended support translates into the ability to maximize the longevity and return on investment from enterprise tablet deployments. With eight years of updates, organizations can potentially use the same devices through multiple Android generation upgrades, significantly reducing frequent replacement cycles and associated costs.
This fits perfectly with increased pressures on companies to focus on better sustainability. Even better, this could allow them to minimize electronic waste from shorter device lifespans while ensuring their mobile devices remain secure and up-to-date.
Potential Industry Pressure?
While Google and other Android manufacturers have made efforts to improve update commitments, Samsung's eight-year promise for Enterprise edition tablets does somewhat raise the bar. Competitors may face pressure to match or exceed this new benchmark, since the enterprise segment is where longevity, security, and cost efficiency are paramount.
Which is all too bad, though, as the consumer segment is unlikely to benefit from these changes (anytime soon) due to the basic dual-generation nature of upgrading devices for more casual users. Then again, one could even pedantically argue that the news isn’t really as groundbreaking outside the Android tech space.
After all, extended software support is a common thing for Apple, and Microsoft typically provides extended Windows OS version support so long as the hardware can properly install the update.
