We all know there's no such thing as a free lunch. In one way or another you'll end up paying for the meal and it's the exact same philosophy with most things in life. Facebook and Instagram offer free access to their platforms but it's paid for by you viewing and they hope, clicking on ads shown in the your timeline. With the number of ads shown on social media platforms on the rise as companies attempt to increase revenues, Meta has announced that Facebook and Instagram users in the European Union can choose to remove ads from their feeds for the grand price of up to €13 monthly.
For €12.99 (~$13.78), those in the European Union will be able enjoy a Facebook and Instagram experience devoid of ads on the web, Android, and iOS platforms. For €9.99, the subscription only removes ads from the browser so you'll need to cough up the extra dough if you are using the mobile apps. Once subscribed, ads will be be removed on all linked Facebook and Instagram accounts registed in the users' Accounts Center until March 1, 2024. After that? Meta will gouge you for another €6/€8 each month per additional account listed in the Accounts Center on the web and Android/iOS apps respectively. So it's not going to be a cheap experience to remove ads if you have more than one main account on the Facebook or Instagram platforms.
The reason for these new subscription models which remove ads from the Facebook and Instagram feed is down to ‘evolving European regulations' according to Meta. It's unclear at this time whether Meta will look to bring the ad-free experience to the US at this time, but if it did, would you spend $13 to get rid of ads in your Facebook and Instagram feeds?
