Shield TV

The venerable Shield TV is receiving a new software update which is removing the Gamestream tool which allowed for the streaming of game titles from a PC and replacing it with GeForce Now.

Gamestream has already been closed down so its removal from the Shield TV is just Nvidia tidying things up. The update is also renaming the Nvidia Games app to “GeForce Now Cloud Gaming for Shield TV” which really flows off the tongue. According to Nvidia, the update is the “first step in bringing new features and improvements to GeForce Now on Android and Android TV devices.”. I'm always bemused when brands claim the removal of a feature is part of improving the user experience. But anyway.

If streaming games from your PC to the Shield TV was a feature you relied upon, Nvidia is pointing users toward Steam Link which performs a broadly similar function. You can find the instructions for setting up Steam Link here.
