Lenovo is in the news today with its demonstration of a rollable phone during its Tech World 2022 event where the company shows off what it's got in the works. Included in today's demonstration is a Motorola phone with a rollable display which, unlike most other such concepts, extends its display vertically instead of horizontally.

YouTube video

The video shows Luca Rossi, the head of Lenovo's Intelligent Device group, pulling out a small rollable device by Motorola from his jacket pocket and pressing a side button to activate the extension of the display. As mentioned, the screen extends upwards instead of sideways which may go some way to mitigating the weak spot of a horizontal rollable. In its normal state, the rollable looks like a wide-aspect 5-inch handset but when the panel slides up it looks more like a modern device that has a 20:9 aspect ratio.

According to Rossi, videos and other content will “dynamically adjust” as the display expands and contracts, which makes sense because you wouldn't want to have part of the image cut off because you haven't fully extended the panel.

As you might expect, no timeframe of when or even if we can expect this rollable device to launch. Considering that CES is in early January and Lenovo is comfortable showing its take on foldable devices during its Tech World event, we wouldn't be surprised if this rollable proof of concept wasn't teased in more detail.
