It's been a topic of the rumor mill for a while but it seems that a new version of the Chromecast with Google TV media streamer is being prepped for launch ‘imminently'. Rather than sporting updated internals with more features and the much requested boost in storage, it seems that the search giant is rather getting ready to launch a cutdown variant called the Chromecast with Google TV HD which, as you've probably guessed, will feature the same, inadequate 8GB of storage as its 4K streaming sibling.
According to WinFuture, the new Chromecast with Google TV HD will go on sale ‘imminently' for €39.99 in Europe which means that it could cost around $30 in the US. The FCC refers to the Chromecast with Google TV HD as “Google G454V” and deems it a “Streaming Media Player”, which it is.
At the proposed €40/$30 price tag, the new device would be $30 cheaper than its sibling albeit without the fancy 4K streaming capability. It's unclear at the moment if the new HD device differs in other ways to the 4k variant.
Besides my ongoing gripe about the lack of native storage on the Chromecast with Google TV, it's more understandable (although just as unacceptable) for the HD variant to only have 8GB onboard. But here's hoping that Google might launch a refreshed 4K Chromecast with Google TV device with at least 16GB of built-in storage so that users don't have to juggle between the apps they want to install.
