ColorOS 13

Based on Android 13, Oppo's ColorOS 13 packs in a load of new features as well as a new “Aquamorphic” design which, as you probably already know, means that water has inspired the aesthetics of the software's UI. New features for ColorOS 13 include a focus on smart multi-device connectivity and smart features, along with additional customization options.

The new Aquamorphic design aims to make ColorOS 13 more user-friendly and inclusive than ever thanks to the new Theme Palette which is “inspired by the changing color of light between sunrise and sunset at sea level”. The new system font improves the readability of system text while the card-styled layout makes for a great look. The Always-On-Display also gets a refresh with a new series of animal images which depict ‘powerful scenes of wild animals in nature'.

Besides the Aquamorphic design, ColorOS 13's ‘human-centric' inclusive design introduces empty state illustrations, adaptive layouts to cater for different screen sizes (or for the upcoming Find N2 foldable), and more recognizable icons to promote increased readability and user-friendliness.

In layman's terms, ColorOS offers more customization options, both in the general UI and the Always-On-Display with an easier-to-read system font, quicker access to music and food delivery apps, as well as Spotify and Bitmoji.

Other new UI features include the addition of Large Folders, Shelf, and the new Home Screen widget to help access information with speed and ease. On the Find X5 Pro's LTPO 2.0 display, the Always-On-Display is optimized down to just 1Hz in order to minimize power consumption.

The pandemic caused a boom in online meetings and ColorOS 13 marks the debut of Oppo's Meeting Assistant which automatically prioritizes wireless data packages to provide a more stable connection so that the meeting call isn't dropped. Banner notifications are also simplified and users can also make use of the Oppo Note shortcut to take notes in the resulting pop-up window.

We all know the pain of transferring files or images from a phone to a computer or vice versa. Sure Bluetooth is relatively stable but it's terribly slow, and sometimes it drops the connection. Oppo's improved Multi-screen Connect supports seamless connectivity between your mobile device and PC as well as more file formats that aren't limited to hardware limitations. Users will also be able to display multiple mobile apps on their computer display, making it even easier to message or control your device.

Under the hood, the privacy and security features introduced by Android 13 are integrated into ColorOS 13, including the deletion of clipboard history after a period of time and the Nearby WiFi feature that allows users to connect to WiFi without revealing specific location information. OPPO's self-developed Auto Pixelate recognizes and blurs out the profile photos and names in chat screenshots automatically with a single tap, and the new Private Safe uses the Advanced-Encryption Standard (AES) to provide its security.

Oppo says that ColorOS 13 will roll out to nearly(?) 35 smartphone models with the year, with more than 20 devices scheduled to get the update during 2023. As you would hope, the Find X5 and the rather excellent Find X5 Pro are the first models to benefit from ColorOS 13 during August.
