Motorola is well-known for its value-for-money smartphones under the Moto G brand, but this year we have a new flagship phone from the company called the Edge+. Powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, and packing in dual 50MP cameras, the Edge+ comes priced at a not-so-cheap $1,000. which is Galaxy S22+ territory.
Sporting a 6.7-inch OLED panel with FHD+ resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate, the Motorola Edge+ features a 4.800mAh battery that supports 30W charging and 15W wireless charging. A trio of rear cameras consists of a 50MP main sensor, another 50MP sensor with an ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP depth camera to make up the numbers. If you've been thinking that you need a selfie camera with all the megapixels, you'll be happy to learn that a 60MP front camera is housed in the central punch-hole cutout on the display. At first glance, the camera loadout would seem to be more appropriate for a mid-range handset but the main sensor does at least sport OIS.
Connectivity-wise, the Edge+ supports 5G in both mmWave and sub6 guises as well as NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, and WiFe 6E. Much like the Galaxy S21 Ultra from 2021, the Edge+ supports stylus functionality although you will need to buy one separately, along with a case that has a place to store the stylus.
Somewhat surprisingly, the Edge+ will launch running Android 12 out of the box with Motorola promising two Android OS upgrades and three years of security patches. It's not Pixel or Samsung levels of software support by any means, so if updates are important to you when buying a new phone perhaps the Edge+ isn't for you.
Coming back to the $1,000 price tag, the Edge+ is facing formidable opposition in the form of the Galaxy S22+ and since it's only being announced at this point, when it goes on sale it may have to also compete against the likes of the OnePlus 10 Pro, although Motorola is promising a $100 discount when the phone eventually goes on sale.
Are you more likely to spend $1,000 on the Motorola Edge+ when it goes on sale or Samsung's Galaxy S22+ with its increased period of software support?
