It's a couple of years since Rocket League smashed its way onto gaming consoles by combining the unlikely duo of driving and soccer into an arena where you attempted to score a goal. It was crazy good fun and now it's coming to mobile devices later this year in a game called Rocket League Sideswipe.
This isn't a port of the console game, instead, Rocket League Sideswipe is being developed from scratch for mobile devices running on Android and iOS. Sideswipe will incorporate a side-on view format where users will control their vehicle, and hopefully the ball as well, via touch controls. There are going to be loads of customization options for your car, competition modes, and both solo and co-op gameplay modes.
So, that's the good news. Now for the bad. The game developer, Psyonix, is aiming to launch Rocket League Sideswipe as a free-to-play title later this year. Yup, free-to-play or freemium as it's also known by, which means that all those customizations for your car and power-ups will likely be available as In-App-Purchases (IAPs).
“Starting today, players in Australia and New Zealand will be able to join a limited-time Regional Alpha test on Android via the Google Play Store. We’ll have more information on future betas in additional regions in the coming months.”
Anyhow, I'm looking forward to seeing just what Psyonix achieves with Rocket League Sideswipes, if it manages to be half as fun as the console version it should be a smash hit on mobile.
