Google has introduced Meet for Chromecast

Google has introduced Meet for Chromecast, and it’s already started being rolled out to Chromecast devices. The new feature should be deployed to all Chromecast devices around the world by the end of the week.

The Google Chromecast team announced the introduction of the new feature via Google’s support pages, explaining the news follows the launch of Google Meet on the Nest Hub Max earlier in the year, and helps bring the Meet platform to more screens in the home. Google explains, “Meet provides the opportunity to stay connected with family, friends, co-workers, and others.” With many people around the world spending more time at home because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this feature could help make the world feel smaller and potentially less lonely.

There is also a tie-in with education, as many schools are reopening using distance or remote learning technology, and Meet on Chromecast allows teachers to join or host meetings, lectures, and classes. This can help students connect and collaborate with one another, or allow teachers to structure lectures. Furthermore, Google Meet is described as, “an enterprise-grade solution for employees to stay connected and on top of work projects.” Allowing Meet via the Chromecast means users can enjoy a different screen and environment for meetings; the example Google gives is how a morning meeting might not involve settling down in front of the living room TV with a big cup of coffee. That’s certainly something I can get behind.

All users need to start using Google Meet over a Chromecast device is his or her Google account, the latest version of the Google Chrome browser, and a Chromecast device running the latest firmware. For further information, users can visit Google’s support page here.
