Redmi announced the K30 Ultra

Redmi, Xiaomi’s Xiaomi’s more value-based sub-brand, seems to have polished the existing Redmi K30 Pro with a few specification bumps: the display can now operate at 120Hz, and the Snapdragon 865 of the K30 Pro has been replaced with the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ SoC. You will also find a different capacity battery, a higher output charger, and the new device comes with stereo speakers.

To cover the display first, the K30 Ultra is built around a 6.67-inch Samsung AMOLED panel of the same FHD+ resolution, but can now switch between 60Hz and 120Hz modes to save power or improve screen quality. The panel is also significantly brighter than the K30 Pro’s 500nits, capable of going up to 1200nits, and has a triple ambient light sensor to control brightness. The second key difference is the substitution of the MediaTek chip in place of the Qualcomm part. The MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ SoC is a high performance, octa-core design, which also includes six AI processors and an integrated ARM Mali-G77 GPU. It’s supported by 6GB or 8GB of RAM, with up to 512GB of onboard storage. Software comes in the shape of Android 10-based MIUI 12.

Around the back, you’ll find a similar quad-camera setup on the K30 Ultra as the K30 Pro: a 64MP main camera using the Sony IMX686 sensor is bolstered by 13MP ultra-wide-angle, 5MP telemacro, and 2MP depth sensors. Selfies are taken care of with a pop-up 20MP camera, which now includes the ability to take 120fps slow-motion video. Another new feature is a first for a Redmi phone: dual stereo speakers, including hi-res audio certification.

As with the K30 Pro, the new phone includes an in-screen fingerprint reader and an IR blaster for controlling consumer electronics. Finally, the device is kept powered by a 4500mAh battery (slightly smaller than the K30 Pro) and there’s a 33W fast charger included in the box (slightly more powerful). Redmi explains this fast charger means the K30 Ultra “can go from low to full battery within just one hour.”

Redmi has given the K30 Ultra a dual-mode 5G SA/NSA (standalone / non-standalone) network together with a dual-SIM switch and carrier aggregation technologies, which theoretically can double network speeds and extend 5G reception. Although the company does not go into detail, it explains how the K30 Ultra, “is able to intelligently match its network utilization based on the usage loads, dynamically optimizing the network.”

The Redmi K30 Ultra is being billed as a 10th-anniversary flagship 5G phone for parent brand Xiaomi and will be available in three colors: Moonlight White, Midnight Black, and Mint Green. Prices vary from RMB 1999 for the 6GB RAM, 128GB storage model – a little under $300 – to RMB 2699 for the 8GB RAM, 512GB storage model – a little under $400.
