Red Magic 5G

The Red Magic 5G is one of the phones we have in for review and it's fair to say it stands out from the crowd in terms of cosmetics and some interesting software decisions and omissions. Thankfully, a new update is slowly rolling out that promises to bring two missing features to the Red Magic 5G gaming smartphone, in the form of face unlock and support for third-party launchers.

You would be correct in understanding that the Red Magic OS did not support face unlock or third-party launchers when the phone launched, both of which are quite unusual omissions in this day and age, especially considering that the phone is actually running Android 10 out of the box.

Besides face unlock and support for third-party launchers, build v3.13 (non-EU) and build v4.11 (EU) also brings the option of turning on the built-in fan during charging to keep the phone cool. This is just an incremental update, the phone is still running Red Magic OS v3.0 and Android 10, but it is good to see Nubia adding in the missing features as time goes on. The update is rolling out in stages so if your handset hasn't yet alerted you that new firmware is available, perhaps you might want to pop over to Settings and System Update to mash on the Check Update button a couple of times.

As we tie up the loose ends for our Red Magic 5G review, let us know what you think of the phone so far in the comments below.

    1. Hi Abdul, head to Settings, App Info, tap on 3 dots at top to access Menu, tap on Default apps, then on Desktop. Choose your third-party launcher. This should then make it the default launcher.
