Google Duo is getting a little bit better for big friend groups today. The extremely expanded video calling feature is finally rolling out today, at least on some platforms.
This feature was especially exciting during a time when most people are still trying to practice social distancing and self-quarantining to stay safe during a pandemic, and things like this make that a little more bearable.
Google Duo group calls
The higher group calling limit, which is now rolling out on the web interface of Google Duo, will let you make group chats of up to 32 people. That's expanded from the previous limit of 12 people, which is a serious bump up. I'm not entirely sure how manageable talking to 31 other people would really be, but I could see it being somewhat useful for professional settings, although that runs counterintuitive to what Google's trying to achieve with Meet and Chat.
As of right now you'll only be able to make these calls on a PC web browser, but they may roll out to phones and tablets eventually. Again, I think managing that many people in a group chat could be problematic on a larger screen, which could be why it's reserved for a web browser, at least for now. I couldn't even imagine trying to handle a 12-person call on my phone's screen.
Keep an eye out during your next Duo call.
