Fitbit Google Assistant

Alphabet scooped up Fitbit a few months ago, but so far we haven't really seen much come out of that. To be fair to both Alphabet/Google and Fitbit, though, a global pandemic is pretty good at delaying plans, and the entire ordeal is still pending federal approval.

But that doesn't mean things aren't happening in the background. A new leak concerning the latest Fitbit app is hinting at Google Assistant support for the wearable, which makes a ton of sense.

Currently the Fitbit Versa 2 supports Amazon Alexa, which made a lot of sense for the device at launch. It makes a lot less sense while it's under Alphabet's umbrella, of course, so Fitbit has been working on putting Google Assistant on the watch.

This leak comes from a teardown of the latest Fitbit APK, which suggests that Fitbit is working on putting Google's digital voice assistant on the watch. Funnily enough, though, Google was supposedly not very willing to work with Fitbit to make this happen at first, and the required Google Assistant APIs weren't available. That's apparently been working out at this point, considering the code is starting to be built.

It does also look like you'll be able to switch between Alexa and Google Assistant, too, so you won't get locked in to Google's ecosystem if you're currently enjoying Alexa. That's not to say that Alexa will be available on future hardware, but you're safe for now.

So will this come to the Fitbit Versa 2? It's possible. It currently supports Alexa and has a microphone, but doesn't have a speaker to read back responses. That might mean that Fitbit will want to wait and deploy this on a fancier watch later this year. We'll just have to wait and see.
