Hacking and tinkering with the software on Android phones is nothing new. In fact, it's probably a big part of the reason why the platform is as popular as it is.
But it's always interesting to see that being taken to the next level. Which, in this case, is a Galaxy S8 running Microsoft's Windows 10.
Windows 10 on a Galaxy S8
Microsoft has been working on an ARM build of Windows 10, which would work on smartphones and other more portable devices, but up until now it's had some memory leak issues. That's been resolved, which gave developers the green light to try and bring Microsoft's home operating system to a smartphone.
Developer Evsio0n was the first to post about getting Windows 10 to boot on Twitter, using a Samsung Galaxy S8 as a test device. Other developers followed suit with other phones, like the Xiaomi Mi6, Mi Mix 2S, and a OnePlus 6.
This is a big deal, but be cautiously optimistic. The build works and boots, but other key functionality is still missing. The cameras and touchscreen are non-functional, and Windows 10 doesn't natively support making phone calls. There are still hurdles to overcome, so think of this as a proof of concept kind of breakthrough.
2020 is going to be an exciting year for Microsoft, assuming things go back to normal.
