Ring has released a couple new video doorbells, including the Ring Doorbell 3 and Ring Doorbell 3 Plus, and it's bringing a pretty key new feature to the world of always-on home security. To accomplish that feature, it's also packing in three cameras, which makes this video doorbell a worthy rival to most flagship smartphones in 2020.

Okay, okay, so these cameras aren't what you think of when you look at a smartphone with multiple camera sensors. But they do allow the Ring doorbell to do something pretty cool, even on battery; it's always recording, and can actually show you what's going on in front of your house four seconds before motion is detected, and Ring is calling this new feature Pre-roll.

Those cameras are constantly recording in a low-power, black-and-white state that doesn't put much onto the camera's internal memory, but this allows the camera to know when to effectively grab footage without draining the battery. This means you can still use a battery-powered Ring Doorbell 3 Plus and get more constant motion notifications, just like you would on a hardwired video doorbell.

The regular Ring Doorbell 3 lacks this feature, but also picks up 5GHz WiFi connectivity to help it stay connected to better routers, plus adjustable motion zones on both cameras. Ring also announced a new Ring Chime and Chime Pro with new designs. These still allow you to extend the wireless range of your doorbells, plus deliver alerts around your house by simply being plugged into an outlet.
