MediaTek Helio G80 tackles smartphone gaming on a budget 4

When you think of mobile processors, Qualcomm is probably pretty high on the list, if not at the very top. There's a good reason for that, considering how powerful their Snapdragon CPUs are and how well the brand is marketed, but they're far from the only player in the game.

MediaTek is known for offering slightly more affordable chips, which are more frequently seen in budget-friendly gadgets and phones. Their latest CPU offering aims to keep doing that, but this time with a heavy focus on gaming to stay ahead of the current trend of gaming-centric smartphones.

MediaTek Helio G80 CPU

The MediaTek Helio G80 CPU follows the Helio G70 that was announced last month, and sits between the G70 and higher-end G90 in the lineup. It appears to be pretty similar in performance to a Snapdragon 710 with support for up to 8GB of RAM, UFS storage, and displays up to 2520 x 1080. Again, this isn't a flagship chip, but it looks like it can support most budget-friendly gaming devices without breaking a sweat.

The chip utilizes MediaTek's HyperEngine technology which promises better gaming performance thanks to more intense CPU/GPU/memory management. MediaTek obviously hopes this will be enough to edge the chip out against its competitors in gaming performance, all while helping to keep device costs low.

Gaming phones are getting more and more prevalent, and it's easy to overlook smartphones as the primary means of gaming for many people. Even if that doesn't quite fit into the demographic that wants AAA titles on mobile with 120fps smartphones that have RGB lighting, it's still a segment that manufacturers are paying a lot of attention to. Having a phone that offers slightly better gaming performance, even in just regular games, stands to be a good selling point.
