Huawei launches Kirin A1 chip for wearables in Watch GT2 and Freebuds 3 4

Huawei is stepping up their low-power peripheral game with a tiny and efficient new processor debuting with their newly announced smartwatch and true-wireless earphones.


While the mobile industry-dominating Qualcomm has failed to support the wearable industry with new, more efficient chips, Samsung and Huawei continue to innovate and thus offer far more compelling feature-sets in their devices; the latest such release in wearable chips comes from Huawei, and their greatly improved Kirin A1 launching in their brand new Huawei Watch GT2 and Freebuds 3.

Measuring in at a mere 4.3 x 4.4mm for an area of just under 19sq. mm, and sporting Bluetooth 5.1 and Bluetooth LE (Low-Energy) 5.1, Bluetooth Ultra-High-Definition audio, and a claimed 30% higher performance at half the power consumption compared to Apple's larger H1 wearable chip, Huawei's A1 looks to be a huge step forward for wearable silicon and no doubt plays a huge part in the specs of the company's brand new wearables, speaking of which…

Announced alongside the Mate 30 series of smartphones, the Huawei Watch GT2 and Freebuds 3 are the first devices to sport the Kirin A1 chipset; with both featuring powerful Bluetooth connectivity, and the Watch GT2 featuring a super-crisp 1.39inch 454x454p AMOLED display and claimed two week battery life while the Freebuds 3 offer up to a full 24 hours of battery life, it's clear that both products have benefitted greatly from the new processor – particularly for that battery life.

Huawei explains that the Kirin A1 is designed to be useful for a variety of form factors, from the aforementioned smartwatches with displays and required graphics processing, to earphones which need only audio processing, to smart glasses, the A1 can do it all.

Huawei's Watch GT2 will be launching in October for a reasonable €249/~£220/~US$275/~AU$400 while the uniquely circular Freebuds 3 have no concrete release period yet.
