Tensions are extremely high between companies like Huawei and ZTE and the US government, especially after a string of arrests and investigations against Huawei. One of the conditions for T-Mobile and Sprint's merger from a key US government department is that they can't use Huawei network equipment, for example.
That looks like it's going to continue and only get worse, as a new report suggests that Trump will officially sign an executive order that will ban any US carrier from using Chinese telecom equipment, regardless of whether or not they're planning on merging with another carrier. That executive order will also likely be signed before MWC 2019, which will send a pretty clear message to those Chinese telecom manufacturers.
This ban would also come at an extremely delicate time for Huawei, ZTE, and others, as tons of countries are beginning to build out their 5G networks. Other countries have already banned Huawei from contributing equipment, and other countries have considered bans, so the US going through with this motion would put pressure on the rest of the world to plan around Chinese manufacturers for 5G deployment.
If you thought that the situation between Huawei and the US was going to calm down anytime soon, you can definitely expect a bumpy year for both parties.
