While flagship level phones get a lot of attention and even mid-tier phones can generate buzz, the low end of the market seems like an unexciting place. Nevertheless, for smartphone manufacturers devices at the lower tiers of the market can be the bread and butter thanks to their price points making them affordable for a wide swath of buyers. In response to the needs of that market, Google developed Android Go, a variant of their operating system platform designed for bottom run devices. The latest such device was announced yesterday when Xiaomi took to Twitter to launch the Redmi Go.
The Redmi Go is about as close to basic as you can get in a smart phone. Powered by a basic quad-core Snapdragon processor – probably the Snapdragon 425 – the device is though to also be equipped with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage. The screen is a mere 5-inch unit running at 720p resolution. The phone also includes an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, and a 3,000 mAh battery. Although Xiaomi did not say, sources believe version of Android Go that comes onboard is built on Android 8.1.
As you may be able to tell from the image released by Xiaomi, the Redmi Go uses a design that is several years old with some nice, huge retro bezels dominating the front display.
Other than confirming some details, the biggest unknown that Xiaomi should be announcing soon relative to the Redmi Go is the price. Sources think it will clock in at less than €80 ($91 USD).
