Now that the CES fun is out of the way, it's time to get back to the regular news, like major manufacturers screwing up simple things. That's what we're all here for, right?
Anyway, turns out Sony has been blocking Kodi from being installed on their recent smart TVs running Android TV, and while it's easy to construe that as something potentially malicious, it turned out to be a basic programming bug on Sony's end.
Long story short, Sony's software classified Kodi as a kernel object because of its .ko filetype, and therefore blocked the app from being installed. And honestly, that does make a bit of sense, since you really wouldn't your TV to be able to randomly install potentially malicious kernel files.
The good news is that Sony is aware of the issue, they know how it happened, and they're working on a software update. Give it a couple weeks and the next update on your Sony TV should right the ship.
