2018 is the year that tablets running Chrome OS finally appeared, with Acer's Chromebook Tab 10 being the first to break cover, followed by the HP Chromebook X2 and then the Pixel Slate on October 9th. It's fair to say that Chrome OS has yet to fully mature as an operating system suited to the tablet form factor, but Google is working hard to enhance the user experience with the recent confirmation that Chrome OS will soon let users view the tablet-optimized version of a website.
While viewing the desktop version of a website works well when using a Chromebook, the user experience isn't what it should be when using a Chrome OS tablet due to the touchscreen being using for navigation. This results in websites both scaling and scrolling in an unpredictable fashion, with touch targets being difficult to hit consistently. Google is aware of the issue faced by Chrome OS tablets, and according to an interview of Kan Liu, the senior product manager for Chrome OS, by Android Police, an ‘upcoming release' of Chrome OS will add the choice of rendering the mobile version of a webpage.
!In the upcoming release, we are also introducing “Request tablet site” in Chrome on Pixel Slate, and with more and more touchscreen devices out there we fully expect the web to continue evolving to be more touch-friendly as well.”
For the moment, it isn't known exactly when this ‘upcoming release' will roll out, but it's hoped that it will be sooner rather than later.
