Building on the successful entry of their YouTube TV service into the streaming television market, Google announced yesterday that they have launched a new YouTube TV app specifically designed for big screen devices like televisions. The move makes sense as Google says their members are streaming several hours of content on a regular basis to Chromecast devices, indicating the use of televisions for consumption of content versus watching YouTube TV on smartphones, tablets or computers.
The new YouTube TV app will be available in the next few days for Android TV devices like the NVIDIA SHIELD or televisions that have support for Android TV built-in. Another big group of devices that will be supported almost right away – as soon as the app rolls out and is available for user accounts – is the Xbox One family of devices like the Xbox One, the Xbox One S and in the near future, the Xbox One X.
Google says they are working with several partner manufacturers to bring support to smart TVs from companies like LG, Samsung, Sony and even Apple TV. They also point out that YouTube TV is supported via Google Home paired with a Chromecast, which means users can navigate with voice controls.
Some of the the improvements Google built-in to this television oriented app to support YouTube TV include:
- Control your live TV experience with your TV's remote control or game controller.
- For a more cinematic look, we made the background dark on your TVs.
- A new Live guide made for your big screen so you can get a sneak-peek at what's airing soon.
- Never miss the action with our background playback experience built for your big screen.
- Easily pick up where you left off on another device when you get home.
