Motorola officially launched the Moto X4 smartphone today and the device may blur the line between devices considered mid-tier and those at the “flagship” level. Inside the Moto X4 contains hardware that is not going to be particularly exciting to anyone. However, on the outside buyers will find features that we typically only see on higher end devices. This should result in a device that may have wider appeal than typical for a mid-ranger, although we will have to see how actual performance is and how the reviews pan out.
The Moto X4 comes equipped with a Snapdragon 630 processor matched up with 3GB of RAM and storage options of 32GB or 64GB. The screen is a 5.2-inch unit running at full 1080p HD resolution. Other hardware includes a fingerprint scanner and a 3,000mAh battery that Motorola says will last all day and makes use of the company's TurboPower scheme for fast charging. As is typical for many of Motorola's smartphones, the Moto X4 gets some decent water resistance protection and comes with an IP68 rating so you can take it out in the elements without worry. Motorola also provides Android Nougat 7.1.1 for the operating system.
One of the key features that may make the Moto X4 more attractive to consumers than what its market position may suggest is the camera. On the rear, Motorola equipped the Moto X4 with a dual camera setup consisting of a 12MP and an 8MP sensor. Motorola says they included “Dual Autofocus Pixel” technology that helps speed up the focus process, especially in low light situations. The camera software has also been updated with features like a selective black and white or color setting. Motorola also built-in the ability for the camera software to do things like search the Internet for more information on objects you capture in a picture.
On the front of the device, Motorola put a 16MP front-facing selfie camera that is capable of capturing wide-angle shots to help others get a better sense of where you are and what is going on around you. In terms of other features, Motorola worked with a company called Tempow to be able to support Bluetooth audio connections to four devices simultaneously. Motorola is also taking advantage of the fingerprint sensor through the addition of their own Moto Key app that can be used to access password protected websites.
Motorola is initially launching the Moto X4 in European markets starting in September at a starting price of €399 ($475 USD) in two colors, Super Black and Sterling Blue. Other markets, including the U.S., will be added later in the fall where the expected price will be $480.
