When Samsung held their big launch event for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, most of the attention was on those smartphones. However, they were not the only hardware announced by Samsung that day. The company also revealed their second generation Gear 360 camera. At the time, pricing and a release date were not announced and news about the device has been non-existent since then. Today Samsung announced the camera will go on sale on Thursday, May 25th, through the Samsung store, major retailers and wireless carriers. Pricing has been set at $229 for the camera, though a special offer exists to grab it for only $49.

The Gear 360 can be used to capture or broadcast 360-degree photos or videos. For this second generation of the device, Samsung knocked the photo resolution back a bit to 15MP. The tradeoff for that is better video resolution as the new Gear 360 is capable of 4K resolution. If a user wants to broadcast video in real-time, they can do that as well at 2K resolution if the camera is paired with a compatible smartphone like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Besides the improvements to the cameras, Samsung also revised the design to give the camera a handle to make it easier for users to grab some shots.

When used with the Gear 360 mobile app, users can remotely control the camera. A variety of editing functions are also available whether a user is working with video or still images.

In addition to the Samsung web site and ShopSamsung app, the Gear 360 will be available through all four major U.S. carriers – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon – as well as U.S. Cellular. Retailers Best Buy and Amazon will also have the device available for sale.

Samsung is also making a special offer for consumers who buy a Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ between May 25th and June 19th. While supplies last, consumers who buy one of those two phones will be able to buy a Gear 360 for only $49. If you are buying one of Samsung's new flagship smartphones and want to take advantage of the offer, all of the details will be available at www.samsung.com/us/promotions/360summer.
