Nintendo has announced a new Fire Emblem game set to come to mobile devices later this year, marking the second big franchise that they've brought to the mobile space after Super Mario Run. The new game, called Fire Emblem Heroes, will launch on February 2nd on the Play Store.
It will play pretty similarly to a traditional Fire Emblem game in which you command and build an army across multiple maps, but Nintendo is working hard to make sure it plays well on mobile devices. You can recruit characters from various other Fire Emblem games in addition to a new cast of soldiers, but they're fine-tuning maps for something a little more mobile-friendly. Instead of huge, sprawling maps that we've seen in other Fire Emblem games, these will be a little more bite sized so you can play on the go and in short bursts.
The game itself will be free, although there will be in-app purchases. That's a stark contrast from the $10 price tag of Super Mario Run that doesn't have any microtransactions, but at this point I think Nintendo is probably just getting a feel for what does and does not work in the mobile space. Fortunately, Nintendo is playing on updating the game after launch to regularly bring in new content and characters, which should keep things interesting.
The game launches February 2nd, which is only a few weeks ago. That's much better than the huge wait time on Super Mario Run.
