We've all been eagerly awaiting Lenovo to refresh the Moto X family of devices after spending 2016 promoting the Moto Z line. It wasn't entirely clear what Lenovo planned on doing with the mid-range Moto X, but a press release seemed to imply that it wasn't on the chopping block.
Looks like Lenovo stayed true to their word, as some new leaked renders from @OnLeaks and Android Authority are showing off the 2017 version of the Moto X. That means there's a pretty good chance that we'll see it sometime next year.
The renders show a device that looks strikingly similar to the Moto Z, so if you expected Lenovo to adopt that design language across all of their phones, you're in luck. There's a front-facing fingerprint scanner, and the large, distinctive camera bump on the back. However, the connector pins for Moto Mods are absent, so those will likely stay a Moto Z exclusive feature.
Leaked specs say the Moto X will be a little bit smaller than the Moto Z and will also keep a micro USB port and a headphone jack. It's definitely going to end up being more mid-range, which will make for an interesting dynamic with the Moto Z Play. It's going to be a tough sell to try and put the Moto X right up against a similarly priced, similar spec device that also supports Moto Mods. Lenovo could try and price the Moto X more aggressively, but then it's cutting extremely close to their budget lineup.
Whatever they do, 2017 has plenty of things to look forward to.
